The History of Shade Sails

Would you believe the history of shade sails stretches about as far back as recorded history? Fabric shades were used in Ancient Egypt, and the Roman Colosseum was shaded by large canvas sails.

The big problem was that all fabrics, over time, were subject to ultra-violet degradation. Modern shade cloth incorporates UV inhibitors and typically comes with multi-year UV degradation warranties.

With the introduction of synthetic materials in the 1950s, shade sails using tensile architecture became viable. The ability of the fabric to “stretch” means it can be kept under tension to create three-dimensional shapes.

Did you know Australia is recognised as a pioneer is shade sail technology? Brisbane’s Expo ’88 used giant tensile “sun sails” to shelter the main pavilions. Later the sails were used to shelter cars in car yards from sun and hail damage.

Today Australia is a major exporter of shade sails to other countries.

It’s not that surprising really, given our beautiful Gold Coast climate. We love to spend time outdoors, and so we value protection from the heat and UV rays of the direct sun.
