The Ozone Layer

We all love the sun, and when you live on the Gold Coast there is an abundance of it, but over exposure can be uncomfortable and, in some cases, dangerous.

The ozone layer is the name for the protective layer of gases that sit above the earth. The ozone layer is made up of natural gases that absorb radiation from the sun and protects life on our planet. However, it was found in the 1960’s that chemicals used by humans were damaging the ozone layer and there was a severe thinning, especially over Australia.

So, whilst we enjoy more sun than most places on the planet, we also have to be more careful as the depleted ozone layer allows more harmful UV rays in that can have damaging effects, such as skin cancer. Did you know that 1 in 3 people in Australia will be diagnosed with skin cancer at some point in their life?

Whilst there is an international agreement through the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989 to restore the ozone layer this won’t happen until at least 2050. So, until 2050 Aussie residents need to be very careful when it comes to sun exposure.

Add your own layer of protection

When it comes to avoiding harmful radiation from the sun, some protective measures are to always wear a good quality sunscreen, put on a hat, cover up and seek shade. Anthony’s Shade Sails on the Gold Coast provide shading solutions that can help keep the sun’s rays at bay. Whether you choose an umbrella, shade sail, or canopy you will be protecting yourself and your family from sun damage.

Enjoy your alfresco lunch, play with the kids, or read a book under your sun shade, and enjoy the comfort and protection our shading solutions provide.
