Why do you need shade around the pool?

Is it easier to get sunburnt in the pool?

Whilst you might sunscreen up before jumping in the pool and you’ve done all the right things, why do you still get burnt in the pool?

• Chlorine is a great way to keep your pool clean and well-maintained, however, it can be an irritant to swimmers causing their skin to dry and chaff. Dry skin is more susceptible to the sun’s rays, and therefore can burn your skin more easily.

• When in the pool, it’s easy to get carried away. As you dip and dive under the water you might throw your sun cap to one side, however, without your sun hat you are exposing yourself to more of the sun’s rays. Always remember to Slip, Slap, Slop.

• When it’s hot, a pool can create the illusion that it’s a lot cooler. As you enjoy the cooling sensation of the pool, you might miss the warning signs that you are getting burnt, it’s only when you exit the pool you might notice your skin starting to burn.

• Water reflects light, so as you sit in and around the pool area you could potentially be exposing yourself to more harmful UV rays.
